Description:
Tenders are invited for X-Band Integrated Transponder EQM. Earth Observation missions have been using S-band for their TTC operations during all mission phases. The ever-increasing number of satellites operating in S-Band is making it allocation congested, requiring complex frequency coordination between agencies and administrations, with the aim of avoiding harmful interference between satellite missions. Additionally, the multi-frequency approach when combining TTC and downlink increases the cost of the ground station antennas since the lowest frequency leads to a larger antenna and it also forces the use of triple feeds for those antennas.Previous ESA activities have developed an integrated X-band transponder at breadboard level. It was demonstrated that this kind of transponder would provide additional advantages at system level:lower communication subsystem mass (30 - 50% less with respect to the one in current satellites), simpler ground station operations, more flexibility on the frequency selection etc. The proposed activity aims to design and develop and engineering qualification model of an integrated X-band transponder. This transponder shall be able to demodulate uplink signals (e.g. telecommand) in the 7,190- 7,250 MHz band and transmit downlink signals (i.e. housekeeping or payload data telemetry) in the 8,025 - 8,400 MHz band, or to be used in combination with a separate payload data transmitter in the 25.5-27 GHz (K-band). The unit shall be able to operate in coherent mode and to provide ranging capabilities when required, e.g., during LEOP (Launch and Early Orbit phase) or safe mode. In nominal operations, receiver and transmitter parts of the unit shall operate in non-coherent mode, and the transmitter shall be able to provide a high-rate link in X-band by employing spectrum-efficient high-order modulations (up to 64-APSK). In this configuration, the unit shall transmit the housekeeping telemetry via the high-rate link.The following tasks are foreseen in the frame of this activity: Update the design based on results from the breadboard developed as part of previous activities.
