Description:
The port of Scheveningen is relatively small, but has several unique features, including direct access to the North Sea along with several essential functions. The activities within the port of Scheveningen vary from maritime activities, fishing and industrial areas to water sportsrt. There is also a large marina where the Olympic sailors have their home base. The area around the harbor is flourishing with restaurants and has an increasing number of residents (both permanent and temporary). The port is easily accessible via several roads that connect the port to the restof the city.
The open and multifunctional nature of the port of Scheveningen also means that it can be attractive to persons with criminal intent who can use the facilities to illegally smuggle goods and people into and out of the port and the North Sea. In contrasting to larger ports, such as the Port of Rotterdam or Antwerp, there are no physical barriers possible in the port of Scheveningen to limit access to people. The municipality of The Hague (GDH) therefore had to look for more innovative solutions that could help combatcriminal activities in the port.
