  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Quantum Technology Study in Estonia (EE_AD03) - Expro Plus. Open Date: 17/07/2024 10:26 CET Closing Date: 09/09/2024 13:00 CET Price Range: 50 KEURO Quantum technologies use the quantum properties of physical objects (e.g. photons, atoms or more macroscopic objects) for both practical purposes and scientific experiments. Examples of quantum properties are the superposition principle, wave-particle duality, entanglement and the uncertainty principle. In the last century, these effects have been mostly studied in academic settings, but recent years have seen an increasing development towards real-world applications. In general, quantum technologies can enable measurements with higher precision (e.g. gravity accelerations, time frequency, electromagnetic fields, etc...), that are leading to new te of devices (quantum computer, quantum cryptography) or enable fundamental physics science experiments (e.g. exploring limits of quantum theory, quantum gravity). In many of these applications, space plays an important role. Examples include gravity measurementswith cold atom interferometers, global time frequency distribution or secure communication. Additionally, new concepts such as the rising performances of quantum computers, the quantum internet or quantum sensing devices offer many opportunities for being used either in space or being beneficial for the space industry in general. In 2021, ESA identified quantum technologies as a strategically important topic and the ESA Agenda 2025 has called for implementing a dedicated RD initiative to support industry and the scientific community. Through the initiation of the Quantum Technology Cross Cutting Initiative (QT-CCI), 9 key interest areas have been identified by ESA:Atomic Frequency StandardsCold Atom InterferometersDecoherence ExperimentsPost Quantum CryptographyQuantum CommunicationQuantum ComputingQuantum MemoriesQuantum enhanced Sensing TechniquesQuantum Random Number GeneratorsIn connection to CM25, ESA is initiating a multitude of new programmatic lines in the ARTES programme related to innovation in the quantum field. In addition, there are more than a hundred opportunities related to Quantum in GSTP. The Estonian delegation to ESA is interested in developing quantum technologies for the benefit of industry and science in Estonia. The delegation is interested inunderstanding the potential capabilities in Estonia related to quantum technologies how to best benefits fromof collaborating with ESA in this field. They would therefore like to use the results of an industry study in Estonia to inform decisions for subscriptions at CM25.The objective of this activity is to conduct a study on the current capabilities and potential of the Estonian industry to productively contribute to the development of quantum technologies for space and to map such capabilities against the 9 key areasof interest listed by ESA along with the potential capacity for and benefits of developments in these areas with regard the advancement of the Estonian space industry and economy. The results of this study should provide recommendations to the delegation of Estonia on funding opportunities, subscriptions
