Description: Center for Health Protection (GZB) of the RIVM is working on projects in (development) neurotoxicology and cardiotoxicology. A lot of use is made of human embryonic stem cell model (the HESCs). The stem cells are differentiated towards cardiomyocytes and neurons. In collaboration with other departments, VTS has shown that in addition to HESCs, induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSC's) can produce useful models. IPSCS have the great advantage that a cell line can be generated from each individual/patient, which can contribute to personalized toxicology and personalized medicine in the future. When developing (stem cell) models for (development) neurotoxicology, it is crucial that models are well characterized. Part of this characterization is testing of the functionality of cells, including whether the cells are interconnected and a functional neuronal network can arise with the most important electrical activity and signal transfer.
