• Tenders are invited for Pre-Phase a of Argonaut Mission 1 - Expro+ The objective of this activity is the definition of preliminary mission concept(s) of the Argonaut Artemis Mission 1, including the assessment of preliminary technical requirements and programmatic aspects up to Mission Definition Review (MDR). In line with the ESA/NASA joint statement on lunar cooperation activities signed in September 2022, ESA and NASA are working together with regular exchanges to achieve a preliminary definition of Argonaut mission candidates, related Argonaut Artemis NASA payloads and, in particular Argonaut Mission 1 as envisaged ESA contribution to the Artemis Programme. Pre-Phase A activities are proposed to further develop the mission concepts definition, requirements and to demonstrate the preliminary mission technical and programmatic feasibility. The outcome of the Pre-phase A activities will prepare for the Argonaut Mission 1 Phase A/B1 studies aiming at an ESA consolidated mission proposal in view of CM 2025. A decision to engage in the Phase A/B1 is foreseen in Q1/Q2 2024. In line with the Argonaut programme elements definition, the object of the Pre-phase A studies is the Argonaut "Passenger", which is composed by a Cargo Platform Element (CPE) and payloads. NASA Artemis payloads are assumed as Argonaut primary payloads. In addition, the pre-phase A study will possibly also address secondary payloads (e.g., scientific or technological demonstrators). This pre-phase A study will include: - Critical review and consolidation of the mission and system requirements; - Review of Mission Concept of Operations and payloads Interface requirements; - Identify possible mission concepts, related configuration and architecture down to subsystem level, - - incl. preliminary equipment selection; - Develop the preliminary technical requirements specification; - Identification of critical technologies, TRL assessment and definition/implementation of relevant development plan(s); - Perform preliminary assessment of programmatic aspects, including industrial costs estimate; - Perform preliminary risk assessment including risk mitigation options, and - Conduct a formal MDR.The outcome of the pre-phase A study, which will be concluded by a Mission Definition Review (MDR), is also aimed to support NASA Mission Concept Review (MCR). Given the dynamic nature of lunar exploration on international level, a timely completion of the proposed activity is viewed as a programmatic priority.
