  • Tenders are invited for Optimal Control Algorithms for Adaptive Optics in Free Space Optical Communications (Artes 4.0 Sl Spl 6c.034) - Re-Issue. Objective: The objective of the activity is the development of optimal control algorithms in the context of Adaptive Optics (AO) systems designed for Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC) scenarios. Demonstration of improvements in AO performance or robustness using optimal controllers will be performed through turbulence representative of those expected in Geostationary and Low Earth Orbit links. Targeted Improvements: Improve robustness and link efficiency of bidirectional Free Space Optical Communications Links through improvement of the Adaptive Optics correction at the optical ground station by increasing the AO rejection performance by a factor of 2. Description:AO is a mature technology in a number of fields and is expected to be important to enable robust FSOC links with satellites, mitigating the effects of atmospheric turbulence. Typically, integral control is used in the AO loop as it is simple to implement and well understood. More advanced algorithms have been developed in the field of astronomy for AO, which account for the dynamics of the components in the system and use knowledge of the atmospheric statistics to improve the performance and robustness of the AO correction. In this activity, such algorithms will be adapted for use in FSOC AO. This would improve the performed of the AO correction, hence link budget efficiency, and the robustness of correction, hence the robustness of the communication links. A comprehensive literature review must be concluded to understand the state of the art in AO control theory, the output of which can be used to inform the choice of controller.Read more.
