  • Tenders are invited for Medium Power Amplifier for Mm-Wave Local Oscillator Sources - Expro Plus Currently, development of LO-power for mm- and submm-wave wave heterodyne receivers is based on multiplication of 10 GHz reference by Schottky varactors and the by amplification by a Medium-Power Amplifiers (MPA) up to around 40-70 GHz range. This medium-power signal is then feeding the passive Schottky multiplier chain which typically consists of doublers and or triplers, such as in MetOp-SG instruments. This line-up has several drawbacks: it is complex requiring several technologies, it is power consuming and it inherently generates a multitude of spurious subharmonic signals that have to be suppressed by separate filter stages.In order to simplify the LO source, it would be beneficial to raise the base reference frequency to 40-65 GHz range followed by a simple x2 multiplier followed by an MPA at 80-130 GHz. This frequency then feeds Schottky or HBV multiplier chain. Because the starting frequency of the mm-wave multiplication is doubled and the base source frequency is higher, the described drawbacks can be inherently avoided. The number of multiplier stages would be reduced and therefore allowing for higher output power and/or increased output frequency from the multiplier chain. Along the novel short gate-length GaN technologies, it is anticipated that the development of 80-130 GHz MPA is now feasible. The LO chain would constitute a mm-wave Voltage Control Oscillators (VCO) at 40-65 GHz (under development - T106-601EF),MPA and one or maximum of two mm-wave multiplier stages (selection of x2, x3, x4 x5 or x6) to cover all relevant EO frequencies up to 1.5 THz. The MPA together with the mm-wave VCO would be an enabling component for this simplified LO line-up and savings in LO mass, volume and power as the power hungry DRO and the first low-frequency amplifier and multiplier stages could be omitted. It is expected that the GaN technology would be able to generate an output power in the class of 100-200 mW over this rather wide-band therefore facilitating also tunable LO sources with minimum component count.This activity comprises development of an 80-130 GHz MPA targeting to an output power of 200mW.This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Technology selection and device modelling.- Breadboarding, MMIC and prototype module design.- Manufacturing, functional testing.Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl.
