The reason and context In 2019 the first Bubble Barrier was installed in the Westerdok in Amsterdam: an innovative system that takes on plastic waste from canals with a screen of air bubbles, without hindering shipping. The air bubbles create a diagonal current that floating waste toA collection system leads. This technology has been developed as an answer to the increasing plastic pollution in waterways and has previously been successfully tested, including in the IJssel. The pilot in the Westerdok was commissioned by the Amstel, Gooi and Vecht Water Board and the municipality of Amsterdam. The positiveResults of this pilot have led to the intention to apply the Bubble Barrier or similar techniques at multiple locations in Amsterdam. Projectscope The project includes the installation of a Bubble Barrier in a waterway with the aim of capturing floating plastic and other waste.The Bubble Barrier works by means of a sloping air bubble screen that blows air up from the bottom, thereby leading waste to one side of the watercourse where it is collected. The project includes the design, technical preparation, the civil activities (including air pipesand compressor installation), placement of the reception unit, and the connection to existing infrastructure. Monitoring and maintenance are an optional part of the scope.
