  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Large Area Multimode Quantum Communication Receiver for Turbulence Compensation and Detector Multiplexing (Artes 4.0 Sl Spl 6c.049) Objective:The objective of the activity is to develop, manufacture and test an engineering model of a large area multimode passivephotonic receiver (photonic lantern or free space multiplexer) for efficiently coupling the light of a turbulent free space channelinto single mode fibres connected to multiple single photon counting detectors. It shall demonstrate efficient coupling and effectivereduction of the detection deadtime when compared to a single detector. Targeted Improvements:Four times reduction of detectiondeadtime and coupling losses compared to a single detector. Description:Current optical communication terminals require tip-tilt and adaptive optics mechanisms to keep the optical beam on a detector, or on a fibre that is coupled to a detector. Those have very small diameters (typically in the order of 50 micron). An alternative to expensive and complex adaptive optics systems is to use passive photonic components that offer a large input area an accepting multiple spatial modes that are subsequently coupled into single mode fibres. Reduction of cost and complexity (and hence increased reliability and lower maintenance) are key for the commercialintroduction of optical receiver terminals. In the case of space-based quantum communication systems, this use of passive photonics may have additional advantages. First and most immediate, coupling the incoming beam into multiple single mode fibres allows fordetector multiplexing, reducing the dead-time which is the main bottleneck for increasing transmission rates. Such systems have been demonstrated in the form of photonic lanterns and spatial mode demultiplexers, with some initial products been offered in the market for conventional optical telecommunications. This activity will aim at the development of a specific quantum communication version of such receiver and will study the benefits of the technology with respect to conventional quantum communication systems. The activity will aim for an elegant breadboard to be tested in free space optical link representative
