• As part of the Wadden Sea Sounds project, the intention is to collect sound recordings of porpoises and environmental sounds in the Wadden Sea. By allowing the equipment to record autonomously, this can be done without the presence of the researchers, all year round and at all times weather conditions determine the presence of porpoises. The purchase concerns 12 hydrophones (underwater microphones) for the Marine Ecology research group within GELIFES. The hydrophones are purchased for the Wadden Sea Sounds project, in which it is investigated where and when porpoises are present in the Wadden Sea, what the level of ambient noise is over this period, and what the relationship is between the level of ambient noise and the presence of porpoises in the Wadden Sea. Because BELIFES is a sustainable faculty, the equipment must also be able to be used for other projects after the end of the project. A long lifespan is therefore necessary. For the project to be successful, the hydrophones must meet specific requirements. The hydrophones must be equipped to pick up the pitches (frequencies) of porpoise sounds and environmental sounds (including shipping). Porpoise sounds fall in the bandwidth of 100-150 kHz, a bandwidth that not all hydrophones provide. Shipping sounds fall in the bandwidth of 0-10 kHz. The hydrophone must therefore be reliable in both the low and high frequencies. The hydrophones must also be able to withstand strong currents...
