  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Fluid-Cooled Robot Servo Train (Frost) - Expro Plus Brush-Less DC (BLDC) motors have amazing torque capability that is only limited by the overheating for ohmic and magnetic losses. As drives need to be sized for maximum torque, commonly used drive system end up having a large gearbox and a small motor with the effect of having large masses and sluggish performance. In high performance terrestrial robotics, liquid cooled actuators have demonstrated a previously unattained level of performance. It is not impossible to have the same level of performance also for planetary rovers. A holistic thermal management system based on circulation of fluid through the motors, their driving electronics, batteries, other subsystems in the rover and finally radiators, can: - allow using very lightweight drives, designed for low average torque but capable for large peak torque - allow continuous operation of the rover across thermally adverse conditions - allow very flexible thermal management (heat could move in any direction). Develop a robot joint with integrated fluid-cooling mechanism. The developed joint exploits the possibility of using an undersized BLDC motor with large average and peak torque achieved thanks of management of over-heating. It also includes onboard electronics that through measurement of temperatures (reaction control) and accurate thermo-dynamic model (feed-forward control) can regulate the flow of liquid and the consequent cooling. This activity encompasses the following tasks: - Perform a state-of-the-art technology survey on liquid cooling of electrical actuators, computation systems and distributed thermal management systems - Develop requirements for a holistic thermal management rover system utilizing a liquid system - Develop a rover concept thermal design using distributed thermal management - Develop requirements for an actuator having a liquid thermal management system - Produce a preliminary detailed design of the actuator and a coolant circulation system - Produce a relevant breadboard design - Manufacture and test a breadboard with the associated GSE - Analysis and validation of the results comparing the performance with a conventional noncooled drive of same performance - Produce a critical detailed design with an identified path to flight (only actuator) taking the breadboard test results into accountProcurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required.
