- Tenders are invited for Expanded Strength and Ductility Envelope of Metals by Microstructure Processing - Expro Plus. The drive towards lower costs of space transportation systems, through reliable, reusable systems adapted for multiple missions, imposes materials with increasingly demanding structural requirements. In addition, growing awareness of the environmental impact of manufacturing activities and material resource management, including for space applications, supports the need to develop structural materials offering enhanced mechanical performance, for similar material usage.Various recent research activity results have highlighted innovative ways of simultaneously increasing the strength and ductility of metallic materials, thereby overcoming the usual strength-ductility trade-off and opening the way to higher performance-to-mass ratios for structural metallic materials. Reported methods include tailored rapid solidification + post-solidification heat treatment in alloys, transformation-induced, plasticity-assisted, dual-phase high-entropy alloys and asymmetric rolling + partial re-crystallization.This activity aims at reviewing, selecting and demonstrating metallic materials processing routes adapted to space transportation systems structures applications, which allow simultaneous improvement of the materials' strength and ductility. This constitutes an essential technological building block towards transportation systems with higher structural performance and lower life-cyle environmental impact.The activity encompasses the following tasks:- Revision of existing materials processing techniques for simultaneous increase of strength and ductility in metallicalloys- Trade-off and selection of processing routes and associated alloys to be investigated in this activity based on relevance for space transportation systems applications- Optimization of the process parameters for the selected processing route and selected materials- Characterization of specimens produced by the selected processing route against requirements for identified space transportation systems application- Development plan towards ground demonstrator and flight implementationThe activity serves the objectives towards lighter structures, improved robustness and re-usability.
