  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Data-Driven Performance Assessment of Altimeters and Radiometers for Next-Generation Esa Altimetry Missions - Expro+ Copernicus has been established to fulfil the growing need amongst European policy-makers to access accurate and timely informationservices to better manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure civil security. To ensure the operational provision of Earth-Observation data, the Copernicus Space Component (CSC) includes today a series of space missions called 'Copernicus Sentinels', which are being developed by ESA, on behalf of the European Commission (EC). The Sentinel-6 mission has a specific focus on sea level rise measurements and sea state measurements. To address the needs of Copernicus Evolution and ensure the continuity of measurements of the altimeter reference missions, ESA, in close interaction with the EC, EUMETSAT and MemberStates, has identified the Sentinel-6 Next Generation (S6NG) Mission as a key component of the CSC Long Term Scenario (LTS). The main purpose of S6NG mission is to provide enhanced continuity of the satellite altimetry geodetic data record for sea surface height, global and regional mean sea level, waves and wind speed, created through the reference altimeter missions, starting from TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, Jason-2, Jason-3, and now the current Copernicus Sentinel-6 mission, and guarantee continuity of the reference altimetry measurements in the 2035-2055 timeframe. The key driver for the Next Generation Copernicus missions is to provide enhanced continuity and respond to evolving user requirements and not the mere replacement of the first generation. For the S6NG mission, this means enhancing the current constellation measurement performance, complying with the evolving user needs for climate research. As is the case for Sentinel-6, S6NG should also maintain the observation capability over inland waters as a primary objective of the mission. In this context, ESA is initiating two industrial studies for the Phase-0 preparatory activities of the mission, with the objective of defining the altimeter and microwave radiometer concepts for the S6NG mission. These two activities have also the task of providing programmatic outputs derived from the concept design, by providing Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) cost estimates and preliminary instrument implementation approach and development plan, which will allow the Agency to assess the affordability of the mission. The objective of this study is twofold: firstly, to establish the benefit of a triple frequency nadir altimeter for the next generation satellite altimeter missions, such as the Sentinel-6 Next Generation; and secondly, to establish an optimum choice of frequency bands for the microwave radiometer instrument, with special focus on the wet tropospheric correction for open ocean, coastal zones andinland waters, according to the ITU regulations. The assessment will be based on data from in-flight altimeters, radiometers, high resolution models, and in-situ observations
