  • Description:
  • Tenders are invited for Aeronautical Experiment in Q/v Band (Artes 4.0 at 7c.079) - Re-Issue The objective of the activity is to design and perform an aeronautical experiment in Q/V-band involving a bidirectional link.Targeted Improvements:50% increase of available spectrum for aeronautical services over existing Ku- and Ka-band.Description:One of the main areas of growth for the satcom market is the provision of high data rate Internet services to airplanes, especially in areas where only satellite coverage is feasible, such as cross-Atlantic flights. The push for capacity in such coverage areas might become so strong that existing Ka-band (20/30 GHz) high throughput satellite (HTS) systems will not be able to cope with the future demand. The Q/V-band (40/50 GHz) is becoming an operational reality for what concerns the feeder link of HTS systems. Beyond its use for feeder links, Q/V band is an attractive candidate for aeronautical services, as it offers a significant amount of RF spectrum. Adverse propagation effects in this band are not an issue for airplanes flying en-route above the clouds. An additional motivation for considering Q/V-band is for regulatory reasons, i.e. to allow a satellite operator to access available spectrum in congested orbital slots when coordination of Ka-band HTS spectrum is not possible. Further, smaller antenna size is always of interest for airline carriers. However, there are risks and technical challenges for employing Q/V-band for aeronautical services, such as the impact of Doppler Shift, phase noise, and antenna tracking. In order to advance the use of Q/V-band for aeronautical broadband services and address these challenges, this activity shall design and perform an aeronautical experiment using a Q/V-band satellite transponder in a geostationary orbit. This includes the development of a Q/V band aeronautical mobile terminal transceiver prototype with critical functions.Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
