The Netherlands has taken a major step toward improving its national transport infrastructure with the award of a €382.59 million contract for the realization and maintenance of the A27 Everdingen-Hooipolder corridor. The contract, awarded by Rijkswaterstaat Major Projects and Maintenance, will support one of the country's most significant highway modernization projects aimed at easing congestion, enhancing road safety, and improving traffic flow.

The contract was awarded on 23 June 2026 under Reference Number 31127608 as part of the broader A27 Houten-Hooipolder infrastructure programme.

Major Highway Infrastructure Investment

According to the contract award notice, the project covers approximately 47 kilometres of the A27 motorway, stretching across eight municipalities, three provinces, three water boards, four Rijkswaterstaat regional services, and three traffic management centres.

With an estimated contract value of €382,590,406.57, the works contract includes the realization and long-term maintenance of key transport infrastructure along one of the Netherlands' busiest road corridors.

Scope of the A27 Modernization Project

The project aims to address severe traffic congestion on the A27, a route that regularly ranks among the country's busiest highways. Major works include:

• Widening the A27 through additional lanes and peak-hour (rush-hour) lanes.

• Demolition and replacement of the existing Boven Merwede bridges near Gorinchem with two new bridges, including a movable bridge section to accommodate one of Europe's busiest inland shipping routes.

• Replacement and modernization of bridges crossing the Bergsche Maas.

• Long-term maintenance to ensure the reliability, safety, and operational performance of the upgraded corridor.

The improvements are expected to increase road capacity, reduce travel times, and strengthen connectivity between key economic regions.

Strategic Importance for the Netherlands

The A27 is one of the Netherlands' most critical transport corridors, supporting both passenger traffic and freight movement. The route also crosses major waterways, including the Lek, Boven Merwede, Bergsche Maas, and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, making the project essential for integrating road and maritime transport infrastructure.
